Kurt Thiim (born in 1958 in Vojens, Denmark) is facing a well-attended outing in classic touringcar racing with the 1996-spec. AMG-Mercedes-Benz ITC C-Class at the forthcoming weekend at the “Großer Preis der Stadt Magdeburg by MCS Stuttgart” from 17th to 19th of May at the Motorsports Arena Oschersleben, Germany. “Dansky”, first DTM-champion in 1986 with the ATN-Frieder-Nickel-Rover Vitesse, will be a well-considered driver in the race for legendary DTM-, ITC- and Supertouring-machinery.
Back in 1986, Kurt Thiim from Vojens, Denmark, secured an all-important motorsports title in Germany. The Danish Guy, born in 1958, became the first champion in the national touringcar series, the DTM. That time, Kurt Thiim was contracted to Frieder Nickel of Aachen, Germany, to drive a single Rover Vitesse, following a minor successful two-car-operation with the drivers Olaf Manthey and Jörg van Ommen the year before. Frieder Nickel and his Team ATN Automobiltechnik then switched over to the Alfa Romeo 75, but the underfunded project came to a halt by the end of the season 1987.
Luckily enough, Kurt Thiim was given the opportunity to take over the BMW M3 E30 of privateer Michael Krankenberg at the Eifelrennen Nürburgring in April 1988. “Dansky” won that DTM-round by a margin and was suddenly back in the frame. His career once again took a major step forward, when he was contracted to AMG-Mercedes-Benz. In the season of 1993, when Rennsport Revue by Carsten Krome was published for the very first time in Essen, Germany, Kurt Thiim was fighting for another DTM-championship title in the green and gold Zakspeed-Mercedes 190E Class 1 at the Diebels-Zakspeed-Team.
After the dismission of the International Touringcar Championship (ITC) due to financial issues in September 1996, Kurt Thiim switched over to Supertouring with the two-litre-Vauxhall. Even after that time, he took the opportunity to race a Mercedes-Benz 190E Class 1 for his county-fellowman Peter Ib Nielsen, who faded away very unexpectedly. Some years further on, “Dansky” took the invitation to drive a 1991-spec. Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evo at the Nürburgring, setting a benchmark in the torrential rain within the frame of the World Endurance Championship, WEC.
In the streets of Aarhus, Kurt Thiim took the wheel of a recreation of the famous Kärcher-Mercedes 190E 2.5-16, like being entered in the DTM-season of 1992 with Jörg van Ommen as the leading contracted driver. Rennsport Revue by Carsten Krome was in place to cover that event as well as the repetition one year later at the Lausitzring near the capital city of Berlin. At the forthcoming weekend at the “Großer Preis der Stadt Magdeburg by MCS Stuttgart” from 17th to 19th of May at the Motorsports Arena Oschersleben, Germany, “Dansky” will be reunited with his 1996-spec. AMG-Mercedes-Benz ITC C-Class he once drove in the very last season of Germany’s premier touringcar league. Of course, the former professional will be one of the well-considered drivers at the place.
